Helter Sketcher #004 - HE BIT ME!
"I am Dracula and I welcome you to my house." - Count Dracula (Christopher Lee)
Welcome back to week four of Helter Sketcher! A midweek check in on my personal sketchbook journey.
+ HiiissSSS! + EEEeeeK!!!
Been on a classic Hammer Horror kick lately…
Decided to rewind and show what I’m been toying with the last few months. Gouache on top of different colored Casein backgrounds. This one is yellow orche casein, which I really like. Makes all the colors pop. I painted this Christopher Lee as Dracula (Horror of Dracula, Hammer Films, 1958) late last year. But he kinda looks like Peter Capaldi. I am slowly working through several of the Hammer Films as gouache/casein experiments.
Here is the pencil sketch on the casein background. Caught myself before I got too far and took a photo of the first stages. Casein has a lovely matte finish. It takes pencil and most media painted on top very well.
Here is a view of the materials. Just below out of sight is my gouache set from Caran d'Ache. They are pan gouache. Hindsight being 20/20 I think I’ll buy a set of gouache in tubes the next go around. Tube paint is already moist and easier to mix. Dry pans are fine, but I’m finding wetting → mixing →wetting to be tedious. I live the desert and it is a consatnt battle to keep water media moist as you work. Tube gouache + Stay Wet palette is in my future.
Next week another Hammer Horror piece. Stay tuned…
